Work to stop HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Freeland continues to discover traffickers who are exploiting wildlife and people. For example, in East Africa, criminals smuggling poached elephant tusks are also trafficking people.

Scam centers and human trafficking: Freeland is currently working with authorities in Southeast Asia and Africa to bridge enforcers from both continents so that they can jointly upend the syndicates recruiting and exploiting thousands of victims.

TRAINING AND MANUAL

Counter Trafficking in Persons Centre of Excellence — Instructor Manual

Freeland, alongside Mekong Club and International Justice Mission, developed the Counter Trafficking in Persons (CTIP) training curriculum. The program equips officers with a victim-centered approach to dismantling trafficking syndicates while ensuring strong victim protection across all enforcement actions.

Victim well-being comes first, so the basic and advanced courses, including CTOC-TIP, ensure that any approach, from arrest, rescue, to asset seizure, results in solid victim protection.

Counter Trafficking in Persons in Asia

This report will first look at a snapshot of the problem and current approaches being taken. It will then broadly evaluate counter-trafficking in persons programs in Asia, noting gaps and highlighting key impediments to improve efforts. This evaluation can be used as a springboard for charting the way forward in the counter-trafficking field and identifying programmatic needs and key stakeholders. It can also be used to predict the expected impacts of proposed policy changes, and necessary improvements to intervention procedures. This report hopes to be a resource for other policymakers and field professionals to draw from, as well as an impetus for social change.

TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS (TIP)

WHO
Every year up to four million men, women, and children are trafficked around the world. Some 80% will end up as sex slaves in the clutches of flesh traders, while the rest will be put to work as forced laborers, toiling under the most squalid conditions for little or no money.

THE COST
On a global level, trafficking in persons accounts for some US$32 billion dollars per year. On a personal level, the damage that it inflicts on individuals (traumatized by such demeaning forms of abuse) and families (torn asunder by losing loved ones) is incalculable.

OUR PARTNERS
To help fight this evil trade in Asia, Freeland joined forces with a community of counter-trafficking organizations to form the Liberty Alliance. The alliance's work is threefold:

investigating and stopping human trafficking crimes
providing relief and emergency services to victims
preventing trafficking through outreach programs.

OUR PROJECTS
Also in the works are projects to help the most vulnerable of all those exploited: children and infants. The Children's Advocacy Center in Thailand will be designed to provide a safe haven for abused kids that will also double as a clinic to give the injured the proper medical treatment they require. Plans are also afoot to open a home for rescued and abandoned babies.
